Is Your Austin Yard Bird Friendly

There are several reasons why people look to have wildlife frequent their Austin yard. Birds have a lot of benefits that can be maximized by people who know how to create a bird friendly backyard. Watching birds glide in and out of your yard can be a great way to relax and reduce stress. Our winged friends also help to reduce the bug population in your yard by eating the little pests and preventing them from making nests in the areas around your house.

If you want feathered guests to frequent your Austin outdoor space, then you will need to provide them with the basics. The first thing they need is food. A bird feeder that is always filled with the proper kind of seeds and other treats will attract feathered guests from miles around. It may be helpful to get a feeder that discourages squirrels and other animals from eating the treats inside. Birds tend to stay away from areas where other animals are already feeding.

The next thing you will need is a reliable supply of water for your winged neighbors. A bird bath offers the ideal solution, but you can get a bit more creative than that. How about putting a small pond in your backyard and stocking it with fish that are native to the Austin area? Not only will you provide a source of water for your new guests, but you will also add yet another way to relieve stress in your own backyard. You can even use rain water collected from barrels placed under your gutter downspouts to prevent you from having to use your home water supply to fill the pond.

If your intention is to entice your feathered friends to make their homes in your backyard, then you will need to offer them a place where they can set up shelter. The birds in your area will take food from your bird feeder, but they are not inclined to make that feeder their home. You can buy some elaborate feeders, but the birds will still want places to make their nests. You could wait years for trees to grow, or you can build a gazebo or some other structure in your yard that has plenty of good places for your little tenants to set up a home. They will need protection from the sun, the elements and from predators. If you can offer that, then you will start to see nests popping up in your yard.

You do not need to open up your home to animals to benefit from what they have to offer. If you want to sit out in your yard and enjoy the sights and sounds of birds as they enjoy a pleasant existence on your property, then start taking the steps to make them feel at home. Not only will it reduce the amount of stress that you feel, but your new feathered friends will start eliminating the bugs that can stick around your house.
